Proposed federal student aid rule could put Atlanta beauty schools and thousands of students at risk

Proposed federal student aid rule could put Atlanta beauty schools and thousands of students at risk

A proposed rule from the U.S. Department of Education could threaten the financial future of beauty schools in Atlanta and the students who rely on federal aid to attend them. Under the new guidelines, career training programs would lose access to federal student loans and grants if their graduates earn less than the typical high school graduate. The goal is to cut off funding for programs that saddle students with debt but fail to deliver a living wage.

The policy targets trade schools and certificate programs where graduates consistently earn low wages after completing their training. Cosmetology and barber schools in the Atlanta area could be hit especially hard. Many of these institutions serve students from low-income backgrounds who depend on Pell Grants and federal loans to cover tuition. If the rule takes effect, thousands of current and prospective students could be locked out of financial aid, effectively ending their ability to enroll.

Supporters of the rule argue it protects students from predatory programs that promise career success but lead to dead-end jobs. Critics, however, say the measure fails to account for the long-term earning potential of beauty industry careers. Many stylists and barbers start with low wages but build a client base over time, eventually earning solid incomes. The proposed rule would judge programs based on early earnings data, which opponents say is misleading.

The Department of Education is currently accepting public comments on the proposal. A final decision is expected later this year. For now, beauty schools in Atlanta and across the country are watching closely, hoping to avoid a financial blow that could close their doors.
