Consumer protection experts are sounding the alarm over a surge in student loan scams, warning that fraudsters are exploiting a period of intense confusion and anxiety for millions of borrowers. As federal student loan payments resume after a long pandemic-era pause, and as court battles continue over broad debt relief plans, scammers are moving in with aggressive tactics.

These scams often begin with unsolicited phone calls, texts, or emails that promise immediate loan forgiveness or drastic payment reductions for an upfront fee. The pitches sound urgent, claiming that borrowers must act before a government deadline or risk losing a one-time opportunity. In reality, legitimate federal loan forgiveness programs, like Public Service Loan Forgiveness or income-driven repayment plans, never require a fee to apply.

Experts point to a perfect storm of factors making this moment especially dangerous. Many borrowers are unfamiliar with the repayment system after a three-year pause, and news about legal challenges to debt cancellation has created widespread confusion. Scammers use this fog to pose as official Department of Education representatives or loan servicers, demanding payment via gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency.

The Federal Trade Commission has issued fresh guidance urging borrowers to ignore any call that demands money for help with federal loans. The agency stresses that borrowers should only work directly with their official loan servicer, whose name is listed on their account at StudentAid.gov. Anyone who suspects they have been targeted should report it to the FTC immediately. The best defense, experts say, is to hang up, delete the message, and verify any claim by logging into a federal account directly.
