In a move to broaden global perspectives for local students, the Mt. Blue High School board has approved an innovative dual diploma program set to begin next academic year. This initiative will create a formal partnership with a high school in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, allowing Mexican students to spend their entire junior year as integrated members of the Farmington-based school community.
The program is designed as a cultural and academic exchange, though the initial phase will focus on welcoming students from Mexico to Maine. These visiting scholars will enroll in a full course load at Mt. Blue, participating in standard classes, extracurricular activities, and school events alongside their American peers. The goal is to foster meaningful cross-cultural connections and provide a immersive English-language academic experience for the visiting students.
School administrators express enthusiasm for the educational benefits this program will bring to all students. They believe that having international classmates in the halls and classrooms will naturally enhance global awareness and cultural understanding for Maine students, preparing them for an increasingly interconnected world. The district is currently finalizing the logistical and host family details to ensure a supportive and enriching experience for the incoming students.
