Safety Day brings emergency responders, Smokey Bear to Breckenridge for community education

Families in and around Breckenridge have a chance to meet the people who keep the community safe and pick up some practical fire prevention tips this weekend. Safety Day is set for Saturday, Aug. 15, running from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the open lawn near the community center. The free event is designed to be hands-on and family friendly, with something for everyone from toddlers to grandparents.

Local emergency responders will be on site to show off their equipment and explain what they do in a real emergency. Kids can climb inside fire trucks, check out an ambulance, and see the tools that police and search and rescue teams use every day. The goal is to make these familiar faces less intimidating and to help residents understand how to react if a crisis does happen.

A special guest is also expected to make an appearance. Smokey Bear will be walking around to greet children and pose for photos, reinforcing his timeless message about preventing wildfires. With the dry summer months still a concern, organizers want to remind everyone about campfire safety, proper disposal of cigarette butts, and the importance of creating defensible space around homes.

Beyond the meet and greet, there will be short demonstrations and informational booths where visitors can ask questions and grab take-home materials. No registration is required, and the event will go on rain or shine. Organizers encourage people to come early, wear comfortable shoes, and bring a camera. It is a simple way to spend a Saturday morning while learning something that could truly make a difference.
