Over 800 area students are Texas education savings account recipients

Roughly 850 students across the Panhandle region are starting the new school year as part of the first group to receive money from the Texas Education Freedom Accounts. The program, which gives families public funds to use on private school tuition and other learning expenses, has now officially distributed its initial round of awards.

Texas Comptroller Don Huffines said his office received close to 274,000 applications for the program. Of those, more than 248,000 students were found to be eligible based on state income and enrollment rules. As of the latest count, over 100,000 students across the state have been granted funding, with the Panhandle portion making up a small but significant share of that total.

The accounts are designed to let parents direct state dollars toward approved education costs, including private school fees, textbooks, tutoring, and certain special needs services. For many families in rural and mid-sized towns, the money means a chance to choose a school that fits their child's needs without paying the full cost out of pocket.

Local school districts have had mixed reactions. Some private schools have expanded classroom space to handle the influx, while public superintendents worry about losing per-student state funding. Still, parents who applied say the process was straightforward, and they are relieved to have the support in place for the fall term.

The Comptroller's office has not yet announced when the next application window will open, but officials say they expect to process additional rounds as the school year progresses. For now, the 850 local recipients are set to use their accounts immediately.
