New Mexico ranks No. 18 as best state for higher education, per U.S. News & World Report

New Mexico has climbed to number 18 in the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings for higher education, marking a two-spot improvement from the previous year. The state's rise reflects a mix of factors, including college completion rates, student debt levels, and the affordability of public institutions.

The ranking places New Mexico in the upper half of all states, ahead of several larger and wealthier states. Analysts point to the state's investment in community colleges and its lottery scholarship program as key reasons for the upward trend. Those programs have helped more residents enroll in post-secondary education without taking on heavy loan burdens.

Still, the state faces challenges. Graduation rates at four-year universities remain below the national average, and rural students often have limited access to campus-based programs. Education officials say they are working to expand online learning options and strengthen partnerships with tribal colleges to close those gaps.

The U.S. News report also weighs workforce outcomes, such as the percentage of residents with a degree who are employed or pursuing further study. New Mexico showed steady gains in that area, though wage growth for recent graduates lags behind the national figure.

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham called the ranking a positive sign, but stressed that more work is needed. She noted that the state's goal is to move into the top ten within the next five years by boosting funding for need-based aid and expanding dual-credit programs in high schools.

The full report, released this week, ranks all 50 states based on data from the U.S. Department of Education and other public sources. New Mexico's overall grade for education, which includes K-12 performance, remains lower at 43rd, but the higher education ranking shows a clear bright spot for state leaders.
