Petsch gives G.I. Public Schools Board of Education update on 2025-26 facilities projects

GRAND ISLAND - Dan Petsch, Director of Buildings, Grounds, and Safety for Grand Island Public Schools, gave an update to the Board of Education on the district's facilities projects planned for the 2025-26 school year. His report covered both ongoing work and future timelines, with a focus on keeping aging buildings functional while managing a tight budget.

Petsch walked the board through several priority items. One of the main topics was the planned upgrades to the district's heating and cooling systems in a few of the older school buildings. He noted that some of the current units are past their expected lifespan and have become harder to service due to discontinued parts. The plan is to phase in replacements over the summer months to avoid disrupting classroom time.

He also touched on roofing repairs at two elementary schools, which have experienced leaks during heavy rains. According to Petsch, the district has already hired a contractor and expects the work to begin in late spring. In addition, he mentioned parking lot resurfacing at the high school and a new security vestibule at one of the middle schools, a project that will require temporary changes to visitor entry points during construction.

Petsch emphasized that the projects are being coordinated to minimize impact on after-school activities and events. He said the district is working with an outside project manager to keep everything on schedule. The board asked a few questions about cost estimates and whether any of the work could be delayed if funding falls short. Petsch responded that the district has set aside reserves for the most critical repairs, but he did note that some non-urgent items, like locker room updates, may be pushed to the following year if needed.

The board did not vote on any contracts during the meeting, but Petsch said he would return with formal bids for approval at the next session. He closed by thanking the maintenance staff for their work, especially during the recent cold snap, when several boilers required around-the-clock attention.
