Democratic gubernatorial candidate Gina Hinojosa has made a bold promise on the campaign trail: if she wins the governor's race, she will fire Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath. Hinojosa, a state representative from Austin, announced the plan during a recent education-focused event, criticizing Morath's leadership over the state's public schools.
Hinojosa argued that under Morath's tenure, Texas schools have struggled with underfunding, teacher shortages, and controversial policies like the expansion of charter schools and the state's takeover of the Houston Independent School District. She stated that the commissioner has failed to prioritize the needs of students and educators, instead pushing an agenda that undermines local control.
"We need a leader at the Texas Education Agency who will work for our kids, not against them," Hinojosa said. "Mike Morath has had his chance, and he has fallen short. On day one, I will replace him with someone who understands that public education is the foundation of our state's future."
Morath, appointed by Governor Greg Abbott in 2015, has overseen significant changes to Texas education, including the implementation of the A-F school accountability system and the response to learning loss during the pandemic. Supporters credit him with pushing for higher academic standards and transparency.
Hinojosa's pledge places education at the center of her campaign, setting up a clear contrast with Abbott, who has defended Morath's record. The primary election is still months away, but Hinojosa is working to rally progressive voters who feel the state's education system is in crisis. Whether this promise will resonate beyond her base remains to be seen, but it signals a no-holds-barred approach to the race.
