Harrison Township school receives recognition for character education

Emma V. Lobbestael Elementary School in Harrison Township has been named a 2025-26 Green Shield School by The Positivity Project, a recognition that highlights the school's commitment to teaching character strengths and fostering a positive school culture.

The designation places Lobbestael among a select group of schools across the state that actively integrate character education into daily learning. The Positivity Project, often referred to as P2, focuses on helping students understand and practice traits like kindness, teamwork, and perseverance. The Green Shield award specifically honors schools that have demonstrated consistent, school-wide implementation of these principles over time.

School officials said the recognition reflects the work of both staff and students in building an environment where respect and empathy are prioritized. Teachers incorporate daily discussions and activities centered on different character strengths, helping students apply them in real-world situations. The approach aims to reduce bullying and improve academic engagement by making social-emotional learning a core part of the school day.

Parents and community members have also played a role, with many volunteering to support character-focused events and assemblies. The school plans to continue expanding its program, using the Green Shield status as a foundation for future growth. For Lobbestael Elementary, the award is not just a plaque on the wall but a signal that its approach to education goes beyond test scores to shape how students treat one another.
