The David L. Long Regional Learning Center in Murrieta is being stripped of its namesake, reverting to its original title following the release of a recent county audit. The Riverside County Board of Education voted to remove the name of the former county superintendent of schools after the audit uncovered findings that led to the decision.
The facility, located on Jefferson Avenue, will now be known simply as the Regional Learning Center. David L. Long served as the Riverside County superintendent of schools for over a decade before retiring in 2022. The learning center was named in his honor in 2019 to recognize his service to the region's educational system.
However, a recent audit conducted by the county's internal review team reportedly raised concerns about financial management and oversight during Long's tenure. While the board did not release the full details of the audit's findings, members stated that the results were serious enough to warrant the removal of his name from the building.
The decision was not unanimous. Some board members argued that the audit's findings did not directly implicate Long in wrongdoing, while others felt that maintaining the name would send the wrong message to the public. the majority voted in favor of the change, emphasizing the need for accountability and transparency.
The renaming process is expected to be completed within the next few weeks. Signage and official documents will be updated to reflect the original name. The building will continue to serve as a hub for adult education, career training, and community programs, as it has since its opening.
