Former Obama education secretary Arne Duncan issued a stark warning this month: Democrats are "adrift" on education policy and losing ground with a key voting bloc. That bloc is parents, and the party's inability to address their concerns is a political gift that Republicans have already unwrapped.
For years, the narrative from the left focused on funding and teacher protections. But the pandemic blew that approach apart. School closures, remote learning struggles, and battles over curriculum left many parents feeling ignored. They saw their children fall behind academically and socially, and they felt the party in power was more concerned with union demands than with getting kids back in classrooms.
Republicans have seized on this disconnect. They have run on a platform of parental rights, school choice, and transparency. It is a simple message that resonates: trust parents, not bureaucrats. Meanwhile, Democrats have offered defensive talking points about "defending public education" without acknowledging the deep frustration that drove voters away.
Duncan's critique cuts to the heart of the problem. He argues that Democrats have become the party of the status quo, defending a system that many families no longer trust. To win back parents, the party must own up to its mistakes. That means admitting that prolonged closures did real damage, that safety concerns were sometimes used as a shield for political convenience, and that listening to parents is not a concession to the right, but a basic democratic instinct.
Without this honest reckoning, the political damage will only deepen. Parents are not a niche group. They are swing voters in suburbs and working-class neighborhoods. If Democrats cannot offer a credible plan to fix schools and empower families, they will continue to lose the very voters they need to win.
