Safety concerns have pushed the Longboat Key Town Commission to find new ways to make sure car carriers use the correct drop-off spot on Bay Isles Road. Instead of just handing out tickets, the town is now leaning on education to deal with drivers who ignore the rules.
The designated unloading area was set up to keep traffic flowing and prevent accidents. But some carriers have been parking in no-parking zones or blocking lanes, creating hazards for other drivers and pedestrians. The town has already locked in fines for these violations, but officials believe that many scofflaws simply do not know the rules.
Commissioners decided that a better approach would be to inform carriers ahead of time. The plan includes distributing flyers and posting clear signs at key entry points to Bay Isles Road. The goal is to make sure every driver knows exactly where to go before they even arrive.
Town staff will also work with local businesses and shipping companies to spread the word. By focusing on education first, Longboat Key hopes to reduce violations without relying solely on punishment. If the educational push does not work, the town can always fall back on the existing fines. For now, the message is clear: learn the rules or pay the price.
