MADISON, Wis. - Governor Tony Evers and top Republican lawmakers have announced a bipartisan agreement that will funnel hundreds of millions of additional dollars into Wisconsin's public schools. The deal, which surprised many after months of deadlock, represents a rare moment of compromise between the Democratic governor and the GOP-controlled Legislature.
The plan is expected to increase per-pupil spending and provide more support for special education programs, a long-standing priority for both parties. While specific funding levels are still being finalized, sources indicate the package will exceed previous state budgets in direct aid to local school districts.
Evers, a former state superintendent, called the agreement a win for students and families. He emphasized that the funding will help address teacher shortages and rising operational costs without raising taxes. Republican leaders, who have historically pushed for school choice and accountability measures, said the deal includes provisions for charter schools and literacy improvements.
The compromise came after weeks of closed-door negotiations, with both sides acknowledging that public pressure and the approaching election cycle played a role. Lawmakers are expected to vote on the package later this month. If approved, the funding would take effect at the start of the next fiscal year.
