Protect Education Act one step closer to Arizona ballot

PHOENIX - A proposed measure that would let Arizona voters decide on expanding education scholarship accounts has moved significantly closer to appearing on the ballot. Supporters of the Protect Education Act have submitted hundreds of thousands of signatures to election officials, clearing a major hurdle in the process.

The initiative aims to broaden access to Empowerment Scholarship Accounts, which allow families to use public funds for private school tuition, homeschooling, or other educational expenses. If approved by voters, the measure would make more students eligible for the program, which has been a subject of intense debate in the state legislature.

Proponents argue that the expansion gives parents greater choice in their children's education, particularly in underserved communities. They say the current system is too restrictive and that families should have the freedom to select the learning environment that best fits their child's needs.

Opponents, however, warn that diverting money from public schools could weaken the traditional education system. They point to budget concerns and the potential for reduced resources in rural and low-income districts.
