AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas State Board of Education is moving forward with a plan to expand the presence of Bible stories in public school curriculum while also making changes to how history is taught. The proposal, which has sparked debate among educators, parents, and religious groups, would integrate more biblical narratives into reading and social studies lessons for elementary and middle school students.
Supporters argue that the Bible is a foundational text for Western civilization and that exposing students to its stories helps them understand literature, art, and historical events. They say the changes are not about promoting religion but about providing cultural literacy. Some board members have pointed to references in classic works like "Moby-Dick" or "Paradise Lost" as examples of why students need familiarity with biblical themes.
Opponents, however, warn that the move blurs the line between education and religious instruction. Civil liberties groups and some parents have raised concerns that the curriculum could favor Christianity over other faiths or non-religious worldviews. They also worry that the changes might pressure teachers to present religious stories as fact rather than as part of a broader historical or literary discussion.
The proposed revisions also include updates to history lessons, with a focus on emphasizing certain founding principles and downplaying what some conservatives see as negative portrayals of American history. The board is expected to vote on the final framework later this year, but the plan has already drawn attention from national advocacy groups on both sides of the issue. Public hearings are scheduled in the coming weeks, where community members can voice their opinions before the board makes its decision.
