Louisiana lawmakers approve Jeff Landry plan to cut school budgets to fund teacher stipends

Louisiana lawmakers approve Jeff Landry plan to cut school budgets to fund teacher stipends

Louisiana's legislature has approved a controversial proposal from Governor Jeff Landry that would redirect money from public school budgets to pay for teacher stipends. The plan, which remains blocked due to an ongoing legal challenge, would take funds that normally go to individual school districts and use them instead to give teachers a one-time payment.

Supporters argue the move is necessary to boost teacher pay in a state that has long struggled to attract and retain educators. They say the stipends, which could total several thousand dollars per teacher, would provide immediate relief without raising taxes. Critics, however, warn the plan undermines local control over education. School boards and superintendents have pushed back, saying the cuts to their budgets could force layoffs or reduce resources for students.

The legal challenge was filed by a coalition of school districts and education advocacy groups. They argue the state constitution requires that education funding be used for the direct benefit of students, not redirected for other purposes. A judge has temporarily halted the plan while the case moves through the courts.

Governor Landry has defended the proposal as a creative solution to a long-standing problem. He has urged the courts to allow the stipends to go forward, calling them a lifeline for teachers who are underpaid compared to their peers in neighboring states. The outcome of the legal fight will likely determine whether the plan takes effect this school year or is scrapped entirely.
