A new statewide effort is calling on everyday Mainers to help shape the future of education. The Maine Citizens' Assembly on Education is now recruiting volunteers from all corners of the state. Organizers are looking for a diverse group of residents to discuss key challenges and opportunities facing schools, from early childhood through higher education.
The assembly is designed to give ordinary citizens a direct role in policy discussions. Participants will meet over several sessions to learn about current issues, hear from experts, and deliberate on priorities. Their recommendations will be shared with state lawmakers and education officials.
Anyone over the age of 18 who lives in Maine is eligible to apply. Organizers are especially interested in voices that are often left out of education debates, including parents, students, teachers, and rural residents. The goal is to build a group that reflects the state's geographic and demographic diversity.
The deadline to sign up is May 10. Selected volunteers will be notified shortly after. There is no cost to participate, and meals and childcare support will be provided during meetings. The assembly will hold its first session in late spring.
This is a chance for Mainers to move beyond social media arguments and have a real conversation about what works in education and what needs to change. If you want your voice heard on school funding, teacher shortages, or student well-being, this is your opportunity.
