An international survey has exposed significant shortcomings in cardio-oncology education, even as the field becomes more vital in clinical practice. The findings were presented at ESC Cardio-Oncology 2026, the second annual conference organized by the European Society of Cardiology's Council of Cardio-Oncology.
Researchers collected responses from over 800 healthcare professionals across more than 60 countries, including cardiologists, oncologists, and trainees. The results showed that nearly two-thirds of participants reported no formal training in managing heart complications related to cancer treatments. Many respondents said they learned on the job, relying on personal experience rather than structured curricula.
The survey also found wide variation in how institutions handle cardio-oncology cases. Some hospitals have dedicated teams, while others lack any clear referral pathways. This inconsistency raises concerns about patient outcomes, as cancer therapies can cause long-term heart damage if not monitored properly.
Experts at the conference stressed the need for standardized education programs. They called for integrating cardio-oncology into medical school curricula and residency training. Without such changes, the growing number of cancer survivors may face preventable heart problems.
The survey's authors urged professional societies to develop clear guidelines and certification pathways. They noted that the demand for cardio-oncology services is rising fast, but the workforce is not keeping pace. Closing these educational gaps, they argued, is essential for improving care and reducing risks for patients worldwide.
