Idaho Charts a Course for Artificial Intelligence in Classrooms

A new law directs the Idaho Department of Education to create a statewide framework for artificial intelligence use in schools. The legislation, which gained broad support, acknowledges the rapid emergence of AI tools and aims to prepare students for a future where this technology is ubiquitous.

The bill’s sponsor emphasized the urgency of the matter, stating, “The genie’s out of the bottle,” in reference to AI’s growing presence. The law does not mandate specific curriculum but instead tasks state officials with developing comprehensive guidelines. These guidelines are expected to address the responsible and ethical use of AI for both instructional purposes and student learning.

Educators and administrators will receive support and training based on this new framework. The goal is to equip schools to harness AI’s potential for personalized learning and administrative efficiency while also teaching students about critical thinking, digital literacy, and the importance of understanding the technology behind the tools they use. The state’s approach seeks to balance innovation with caution, ensuring Idaho’s students are both savvy and safe in an AI-driven world. The department is expected to develop these policies in consultation with teachers, parents, and technology experts.
