State education officials announced a new $10 million investment aimed at expanding childcare services at public colleges and universities. The funding will support the construction of new facilities, the renovation of existing centers, and the training of childcare staff across multiple campuses.
During a press conference on Wednesday, department leaders stressed that reliable on-campus childcare can determine whether a parenting student completes their degree. "For many students, especially single parents, the availability of affordable childcare is the single factor that makes or breaks their ability to stay enrolled," said a department spokesperson. "Without it, they are forced to choose between their education and their family."
The initiative targets institutions with the highest populations of student parents. Data from the department shows that nearly one in five college students is raising a child, yet fewer than half of public campuses offer dedicated childcare facilities. Those that do often have long waitlists and limited hours.
The funding will be distributed through a competitive grant process. Schools can apply for up to $1.5 million each, with priority given to those serving rural communities and low-income students. Recipients will be required to offer sliding-scale fees based on family income.
Officials also noted that the investment is expected to improve graduation rates. Studies cited by the department indicate that student parents with access to on-campus childcare are 30 percent more likely to earn a degree within six years compared to those without.
The first round of grants is expected to be awarded before the start of the next academic year.
