Greenwich Republican Named To Lamont’s Education Funding Commission

A Greenwich Republican has been selected to serve on a newly formed commission tasked with overhauling how Connecticut funds its public schools. The commission, established by Governor Ned Lamont, will conduct a comprehensive review of the state’s education funding system and issue formal recommendations to both the governor and the General Assembly.

The scope of the commission’s work is broad and ambitious. Members will analyze Connecticut’s current funding landscape, examining how state dollars are distributed among school districts and whether the existing formula meets the needs of students. The panel will also study funding models from other states to identify best practices and innovative approaches. Additionally, the commission will investigate the primary cost drivers facing school districts, such as special education, transportation, and facility maintenance, which have put increasing pressure on local budgets. A key focus will be evaluating proven strategies that have delivered better academic outcomes for students, with the goal of ensuring that any new funding system is both equitable and effective.

The appointment of a Republican to the Democratic governor’s commission signals a bipartisan effort to address a long-standing and contentious issue in Connecticut education policy.
