GEORGIA – On Tuesday, December 2, the Senate Study Committee on Higher Education Affordability convened to discuss critical issues surrounding the funding of higher education in the state. The committee adopted a report revealing significant disparities in state grant aid distribution. Nationally, approximately 74 percent of state grant aid was designated as need-based for the 2022-23 academic year. However, Georgia's statistics starkly contrast this trend, with only about 1 percent of state grant aid being need-based. Instead, a staggering 99 percent of the aid provided in Georgia was merit-based.
This finding raises concerns about accessibility for low-income students who may not qualify for merit-based aid. The committee's report aims to shed light on the urgent need for a more equitable distribution of financial resources to ensure that all students, regardless of their economic background, have the opportunity to pursue higher education. The discussions from this committee are expected to influence future policies aimed at improving affordability and access to higher education in Georgia.
