The Boston Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO) and its affiliated Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra will cease operations permanently following the conclusion of the 2026-2027 season. The announcement, made by Managing Director Sean Lewis, marks the end of a nearly half-century legacy of performance and music education in the region.
Founded in 1979, the orchestra has been a staple of the city's cultural landscape, renowned for its ambitious programming and commitment to artistic excellence under the leadership of its founder. The decision to wind down was described as a deliberate and planned conclusion to the organization's work, rather than a sudden closure due to financial crisis.
The final two seasons will proceed as scheduled, allowing the ensembles to celebrate their history and provide a proper farewell to their audiences and supporters. The closure encompasses all activities, including the orchestra's community outreach and educational initiatives, which have been a cornerstone of its mission. The announcement has prompted reflection on the orchestra's significant impact, having provided a platform for generations of musicians, both professional and student, and enriched the community with countless performances.
