71 Years After Brown: Massachusetts Schools Still Struggle with Segregation

Seventy-one years after the landmark Brown vs. Board of Education decision, Massachusetts schools continue to grapple with significant racial and socioeconomic segregation. Despite the historic ruling that declared racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional, many districts in the state have not achieved the integration that was envisioned.

The legacy of segregation is particularly evident in Boston, where the busing crisis of the 1970s aimed to address these disparities. However, decades later, the promise of equitable education remains unfulfilled. Many students still attend schools that are predominantly composed of one race or economic class, limiting their access to diverse educational experiences and resources.

Advocates are calling for renewed efforts to dismantle systemic barriers that perpetuate inequality in the education system. With the need for comprehensive reforms more urgent than ever, Massachusetts faces a critical moment to honor the commitment made over half a century ago and ensure all students receive a quality education, regardless of their background.
